Narrative by (DS): In the early summer of 1914 in Tynemouth, Thomas Emmanuel J GUMMET, married Ann STENHOUSE. This was a matter of only a few weeks before the Great War broke out in August 1914. Being born in 1891 and therefore just 23, Thomas became involved. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve as a 'Deck Hand' and was given the service number 8404/DA. | |

On the 31st December 1915, Thomas was on board Trawler Speeton (CRK) sailing in the North Sea off Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. He was killed when the ship struck a mine. A paragraph in the Eastern Evening News of the 5th January 1916 told of how a coastguard had found Thomas' dead body floating at sea and had brought it back to Yarmouth where an Inquest had taken place which had determined that Thomas had been 'accidentally drowned through vessel being blown up by mine'. He was brought back to Tynemouth where he was buried in Preston Cemetery in a Commonwealth War Grave (number F.U.11858). To compound the sadness, on the 18th January 1916, just three weeks after Thomas' death, his wife Ann gave birth to a son, Thomas William GUMMET. This narrative has been published on EveryManRemembered.org |
| Following Thomas' death, Ann Amelia remarried, this time to Alan S ROSS or ROSE (D/1918, Grimsby, 7a, 1547) (Free BMD) | |
