Narrative by (DS):
The GUMMET family, having metamorphosed into the MARTINGUMMETs, stood together for one last moment in 1901 as that year's census enumerator recorded them at their home at 40 Mountgrove Road in Highbury. Life was about to move on.
The eldest of the family was FLORENCE MARY GUMMETT, born in 1881 and, in that 1901 census, a 'Milkman'!
On the 12th April 1902, Florence married WILLIAM JOSEPH LEVETT at the Register Office in Islington. Florence gave 65 Elwood Street as her address - this was her family home prior to the move to Mountgrove Road.
William, 24 years old and the son of Alfred LEVETT ('Builder'), was born in Finsbury Park in 1878 and now lived at 84 Blackstock Road. Florence’s father, William Thomas MARTIN-GUMMETT and her younger sister May were the witnesses.
Florence and William came to live in Tottenham, initially at 20 Chameleon Road and, after 1911, at 11 Asplins Road. They were to have 14 children between 1902 and 1930.
In 1935, William died of a heart attack suffered as he was in the street in Tottenham. He was 57 years old.
Florence became very ill during the 1950s and went to live in Worthing with her daughter Ivy. Florence died there in 1958, aged 77. |
