Robert was 39 at the beginning of the Great War, and working in probably a protected industry, nevertheless he signed up as a rifleman in the London Regiment (Queen Victoria’s Rifles) serving initially in the 18th Battalion (service number 5063) and later in the 9th Battalion (service number 419007).
Somehow, Robert was able to find time to marry his brother's sister-in-law in 1916. Maybe he didn't sign up until part way through the war? Maybe he was home on leave at the time?
Robert died on the Somme just before the end of the war aged 43 - a sobering thought eh?. Robert has no known grave but his name is inscribed on a commemorative plaque, together with many others, at the Pozieres Cemetery.
As part of the 2014 Tower of London Remembers Project, Robert's name was one of a Roll of Honour containing 180 names that were read out from the moat of the Tower of London at sunset on 7 August 2014. The roll call started at 20.40 and ended at 21.00, with an Army bugler playing The Last Post.
Robert is also included on EveryManRemembered.org
