Once, when her mother was in labour with one of her younger siblings, Vella was sent to fetch the doctor. The doctor swept her up into his carriage and on arrival at the house, he spent some minutes remonstrating with Vella's father: what was he thinking, allowing a young girl to walk the streets of the East End while Jack the Ripper was at large?
