| William James was described as being 5' 7" tall, with a 38" chest, with light brown hair, blue eyes and a fresh complexion when he joined the Navy at Chatham in November 1909. He was first posted on board HMS Pembroke I, followed by the Charybois, back to Pembroke I, then to the Victorious and to the Victory.
